Itinerary

Day 1 – Wednesday, October 1: Mt. St. Helens & Astoria
Our journey begins with a rendezvous in Portland, followed by a drive north along the lower Columbia River, before turning east to head to Coldwater Ridge, in the blast zone of Mt. St. Helens. Here, you’ll visit a very retro visitor’s center that should bring back memories of 1980! Next, we’ll visit the visitor center at Silver Lake, which will give you a much more in-depth overview of both the local experience and geology of the events of 1980. In the afternoon, we’ll head west to Astoria, the oldest permanent US settlement west of the Rocky Mountains. After visiting the Columbia River Maritime Museum and historic downtown Astoria, we’ll make our way to the Astoria Brewing Company for dinner, and finally the Lloyd Hotel Astoria Bayfront to refresh for a new day.
Day 2 – Thursday, October 2: Haystack Rock & Newport
On Day 2 we’ll stop at Cannon Beach, where you’ll have time to wander the charming downtown boutique shops, art galleries, cafes, and restaurants, before making a visit to the beach near Haystack Rock, the most famous sea stack on the West Coast. We’ll continue the adventure south along the coast, with a short hike through an oldgrowth forest at Short Sand Beach, one of the most popular surfing locations on the Oregon Coast. Keep your eyes open for mushrooms, big trees, and surfers! Finally, we’ll make a snack stop at the Tillamook Creamery, where you can observe the genesis of Tillamook Cheese, before ending at the Newport Historic Bayfront, home to Oregon’s largest commercial fishing fleet.
Day 3 –Friday, October 3: Oregon Coast Aquarium & Thor’s Well
Today we visit the Oregon Coast Aquarium, harboring the largest outdoor seabird aviary in North America, before heading south along the coast through the largest expanse of coastal sand dunes in North America. Our day begins at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, where Keiko, the orca from Free Willy, lived for 2 years. After the aquarium, we will head back to the Newport Bayfront for lunch. As we journey south, you will see a stunning coastline of surf interacting with ancient basalt, historic lighthouses, massive sand dunes, and botanical endemics. With a stop at Cape Perpetua, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking view of Thor’s Well, Spouting Horn, Loki’s Revenge, and Cook’s Chasm. Depending on time and group interest, we may also visit a boardwalk through a fen of carnivorous cobra lilies (Darlingtonia californica). As we continue south, you’ll get views of the Heceta Head Lighthouse, the strongest light on the Oregon Coast, and a seemingly endless expanse of Sand Dunes. After a day of learning about coastal life and outstanding scenery, we’ll finish at our accommodations in Coos Bay, where you can unwind and enjoy dinner on your own.
Day 4 – Saturday, October 4: Shore Acres State Park & The Redwoods
This day is dedicated to an Oregon State Park and a California State Park. Shore Acres State Park not only harbors formal gardens, but also another uniquely stunning section of Oregon coastline dominated by cliffs of tilted sandstone strata. Heading south from here, we’ll give you time to grab lunch at Brookings Harbor. After lunch, we’ll drive through the majestic Redwoods of Jedediah Smith State Park, where we’ll give you an opportunity to check in at the visitor’s center and get some pictures with some of the tallest and oldest trees in the world. After this, we’ll head northeast through the Klamath Mountains onto Grants Pass for the night.
Day 5 – Sunday, October 5: Crater Lake & Newberry National Volcanic Monument
On this next leg, we’ll ascend into the Cascade Mountains until we are on the rim of Crater Lake, before descending into the high desert of eastern Oregon, north to Bend. Driving the rim of Crate Lake, you’ll witness the deep blue of the deepest lake in the United States. You’ll have time to check out the historic lodge, viewpoints, the visitor center, and you’ll have a picnic lunch. After descending from Mt. Mazama, as we head north we’ll pass through Newberry National Volcanic Monument, where you’ll see a stunning landscape of young basalt flows, cinder cones, and a shield volcano. In Bend, we’ll have a final dinner together, before bedding for the night.
Day 6 – Monday, October 6: High Desert Museum, Timberline Lodge, & Multnomah Falls
On the final day of our journey, we’ll spend the morning at the High Desert Museum before continuing north to Mt. Hood, with a final leg through the Columbia Gorge to Portland. The High Desert Museum is a museum of natural and cultural history that focuses on the high desert that dominates most of central and eastern Oregon. We’ll then head north past the sport climbing mecca known as Smith Rock all the way to the historic Timberline Lodge on the southern slope of Mt. Hood, where you can enjoy some time on your own. After Timberline Lodge we’ll continue north through the Hood River Valley, then east through the Columbia Gorge, offering views of vineyards, orchards, fall color, monoliths, dams, cliffs, and Multnomah Falls, tallest waterfall in Oregon, and most visited site in the Pacific Northwest. After you spend some time at Multnomah Falls, you can reflect on the memories and deeper appreciation you’ve developed for the natural and cultural history of a large swath of the Pacific Northwest on the return drive to Portland.
